Up until the end of 2009, the Elkhorn Valley Cycling Club used to be its only race team, Elkhorn Valley Cycling powered by Monster (EVCpM), to promote cycling and the cycling lifestyle. That all changed in 2010 though. This year the main team will remain Elkhorn Valley Cycling powered by Monster but have added two teams to the roster: Elkhorn Valley Cycling – Triathlon and EVCCX – Monster.
The Triathlon team is a result of many of the club members gravitating toward the multisport events. EVCC wanted to support them fully and is now an affiliate of USA Triathlon and have tri-specific clothing.
EVCCX-Monster is a new and exciting venture into an off-road specific team. The club as a whole sees cyclocross as a powerful force in the future of cycling as a sport. To embrace that concept EVCC wanted to give an extra kick to those who race ‘cross, and other off-road events, by giving them a little extra recognition with a special team designation and unique uniforms.
Another exciting development with EVCC is an affiliation with Team Type 1. Craig Harding started the first club team under the pro Team Type 1 banner in Nebraska a year ago and it is growing rapidly. As a result, EVCpM and TT1 will race as a combined team in 2010 pooling their efforts for positive finishes at road in the area.
The Elkhorn Valley Cycling Club started in Norfolk as a local time trial series in 2004 and grew from there. Founders Dan Spray, Jesse Vincent, and Jon Downey put the club together and started promoting USA Cycling races. Dan and Jon continue to lead the group.
Being able to host State Championship events has been a highlight of the club as well as having several State Champions and Riders of the Year, including multiple ROY winner Duane Blair. Club members are also very active in the Nebraska Cycling Association where member John Spray currently serves as Vice President. Other club members hold board positions with the NCA. Club member Jon Downey is a Class B USA Cycling official while Joe Savoie is working on his USA Cycling coaching certificate.
For 2010, EVCC is looking forward to advancing several of their riders up in race category and to having a strong women’s team. EVCC's biggest success is being recognized as a well-rounded group of cyclists who a good competitors and good people.
The primary goal of the club is to promote cycling as a sport and as a lifestyle. The race team is a means to showcase what is possible through cycling, and to generate excitement about cycling in general. EVCC aims to support their club members and racers in developing to their full potential.
EVCC annually participates in the Landon Bos Memorial Bicycle Rodeo and assists with various Boy Scout and other youth activities throughout the year. Club members are frequent speakers at local service club meetings promoting the cycling lifestyle.
