norfolk_classic_logosmallNorfolk - Registrations are open for both days of the Norfolk Classic Cycling Weekend at SportsBaseOnline. Registration must be made for BOTH days as this is NOT a stage race nor an omnium.

  • Registration for the Norfolk Classic Road Race powered by Monster is here.

  • Registration for the Nebraska State Championship Criterium is here.

Total cash purse for the weekend is $6000 with $2000 allocated to the road race and a whopping $4000 in prize money to be awarded at the State Championship Criterium. In addition, several nice primes are on the table for the criterium. Finally, Rightway Performance Coaching will be awarding a free power test to the winners of the Men’s Cat 4, Men’s Cat 5, Women’s Cat 4, and the Junior classes each day.

The Norfolk Classic Cycling Weekend is in its third year and grows each year. This year the

Saturday road race will again be held on the (in)famous Stanton Road Race course. Race headquarters will be at the Stanton Fairgrounds, same as 2007. This year full rest room and shower facilities will be available on site. Riders will roll to the line for a 10AM start with waves of riders starting every few minutes.

Sunday the venue changes to the popular Downtown Norfolk Criterium Course. Back again for 2008, the

course features left and right hand turns, awesome spectator spots, two-way racing in front of the announcer stand, and a long finish line stretch tailor-made for exciting primes and photo-finishes. Several area restaurants and watering holes will be open during the day featuring front row seating for the action. Neutral support during the criterium will be provided by Cleveland Bike and Sport.

Medals and prizes for each day of racing will be presented with no overall weekend awards. Award ceremonies for the road race will be held immediately following the finish of the day’s racing while the Sunday criterium awards will be presented throughout the day. Cash payouts will be made to no more than 50% of the field.

State Championship medals will be awarded at the State Championship Criterium on Sunday to eligible participants. To be eligible, a rider must be an annual USA Cycling road racing license holder and a Nebraska resident. Annual licenses must be purchased prior to race-day to be eligible.

The Norfolk Cycling Weekend gives Nebraska riders two opportunities for Nebraska Rider of the Year points. Both days of racing are USAC permitted and sanctioned by the Nebraska Cycling Association . The Norfolk Classic Cycling Weekend is promoted by the Elkhorn Valley Cycling Club and sponsored by Monster Energy and the Norfolk/Madison County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Kent McNeill along with a few others have been busy the last month and a half. France last month and Leadville 100 this month. Kent was kind enough to regale us with his account of their adventures.

2008 E’tape Du Tour

This year was supposed to be easier. I suppose in terms of mileage and total elevation gain, it was. Our route from Pau over the Tourmalet and then to the top of Hautacam was 108 miles with 11,600 feet of climbing. The past couple of years our routes have been from 125-150 miles with 13,000 to 14,000 feet of climbing and we have ridden in extreme heat conditions. This swung us to the other end of the spectrum. Hypothermia!

"Your from Nebraska?" the gal at medical check in asked. "Yes" Steve replied. "So you’re taking the high altitude medication Diamox then?" she asked. "No" Steve replied, having never heard of it. "Oh Boy!" she said with a tone of amazement and worry. "Good Luck!"
