Sunny skies and warm temperatures were accompanied by ever-increasing winds giving each rider a sense of false hope during the first half of the out-and-back route. Most reported that the first half of the race, going out with the wind, was stellar while the return trip into the wind was, in fact, hell.
For the second year in a row, the Elkhorn Valley Cycling powered by Monster club of Norfolk promoted the event. The event went off without a hitch and few, if any complaints. After the race, Race Director Dan Spray summed it up: “We were happy with the turnout and the weather. What would it be if it wasn’t windy in Nebraska?”
Cody McCullough of Powerade/Independent Fabrication turned out the fastest time of the day with a time of 0:56:50 over the 40km course. Others who finished under one hour were Matt Landen (Nebraska Medical Center/Team Kaos) and Mark Brackenbury (Nebraska Medical Center/Team Kaos).
State Champions were Emily Bradley (Junior Female), Noah Burke (Junior Male), Lindsey Heim (Cat 4 Female), Jim Blue (Cat 5 Male), Justin Maresh (Cat 4 Male), Peter Duryea (Masters 35+), Mark Brackenbury (Masters 45+), Fred Galata (Masters 55+), Morgan Chaffin (Women 1/2/3), Matt Pavlovich (Cat 3 Men), and Matt Landen (Pro/1/2 Male).
Racing returns to Norfolk for the next two installments of the Nebraska Rider of the Year series with the Norfolk Classic. June 7 will be a road race on the infamous Stanton road race course. The second race of the weekend will double as the 2008 Nebraska State Championship Criterium on June 8 on the downtown Norfolk course. Prize money has been increased for these events, with each being a stand-alone race. The total purse for the State Criterium is $4000! Don’t miss it.
