Have you seen the green jerseys with the paws on the sleeves around Lincoln and Omaha? That’s us! TeamFIRE was founded in 2004. FIRE is an acronym for First In Racing Experience. The team is a grass roots cycling club and was formed after a few guys interested in cycling and racing for their first time found little support for the neophyte racer. Based on this common experience, a team was formed to create an organization of cycling enthusiasts that want to train and race perhaps for the first time.
Whether your goal is training for strategic racing or personal improvement through conditioning you will likely find someone on the team with similar goals in our diverse group. We compete in cycling events of all types as well as local sporting and endurance events, including, duathlons, adventure racing and marathons. Our team racers will be competing in many road and off-road events again this year. 2008 will be an exciting year for TeamFIRE as we will be sponsoring the Nebraska State Road Race Championship in September and a charitable bike race for food bank donations called “Cranksgiving” in November. Many of our members also volunteer their time and support for area races of all types. TeamFIRE will also continue in the adopt-a-trail program in Lincoln. Our section of the Rock Island trail is from Calvert Street to Highway 2. Our regular group rides meet at the south end of this trail segment (“The Bridge”). Word has definitely spread about our weekly ride that we call ‘No Rider Left Behind’ Wednesday nights. This is a ride for anybody to take part in, be it cycling veterans or very new cyclists. It is a “no drop ride,” and there will always be a teamFIRE rider holding up the rear of the group. Check our website for start times and other impromptu group rides. TeamFIRE is a USCF registered team and the events we sponsor this year will be sanctioned. We have 25 members in our club as we start the new season and look to add many more this year. Our prime supporter Yankee Hill Veterinary Hospital of Lincoln has agreed to be our major sponsor again this year and we thank them for their continued support for Lincoln cycling. We begin our 4th year as a team we have evolved into a friendly harbor for cyclists of all types. The Lincoln Nebraska based club has seen rapid growth in the last couple of years. We foster a club environment that coordinates regular group rides and welcomes all riders of all skill levels.
