UNL Cycling raced a dominating performance on North Dakota on Saturday, grabbing every podium spot from the collegiate Competition.
UNL riders placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th, with all racers on the podium. UNL Cycling currently has the top-ranked collegiate team in the North Central Collegiate Cycling Conference, and all but guaranteed a team spot at Nationals with this one performance.
Early in the race (100m after the end of the neutral start), winner Ian Robertson broke off the front with 2 Minnesota riders, after 10 miles, UNL rider Jeremiah Grell bridged the gap to the lead group to even the odds. After another 16mile lap, the other three UNL A-team riders, Tim Farnham, Tommy Ralston, and Aaron Poole, broke free of the peloton and joined the lead bunch. Textbook working-over ensued as Poole and Robertson jumped free with a Minnesota rider, who was soon dropped, soon after Poole flatted, was given a wheel by Ralston. After a lap riding solo, Robertson crossed the line 2 minutes clear of Poole, who was a minute up on the Farnham, Ralston, and Grell group. The first Minnesota rider crossed the line another minute down, and the remaining pack finished a further 2 minutes down.
UNL Cycling continues to be the top young rider development squad in the state, and the strength of this performance illustrates the team’s depth and growing talent.
Watch out for the collegiate races at the Spring Classics in Lincoln, with the Conference Championships in Minneapolis 2 weeks later – leading up to the Collegiate National Championships in Lawrence Kansas May 13-15. |
