The Elkhorn Valley Cycling Club burst onto the Nebraska cycling scene in 2006, fielding a competent team of road racers who quickly left their mark. The Club also promoted the inaugural Norfolk Classic in 2006 premiering what is now the premier Criterium course in Nebraska.
2007 brought an expanded roster of riders and race calendar. In addition to road racing Elkhorn Valley Cycling powered by Monster moved into the dirt coming away with much success. The Club promoted the infamous 2007 Nebraska State Time Trial and the 2nd Annual Norfolk Classic and the Maskenthine XC Classic, as part of the Nebraska Lottery Psycowpath Series.
Team Leader Dan Spray points out “We have a really strong team that has it’s priorities in order. Everyone understands that fun comes first and winning second. We just want to better ourselves and our sport.” In Rider of the Year standings as the end of 2007, Elkhorn Valley Cycling powered by Monster had six of the top ten places in Category 4. The highest place in Cat 4 went to 2005 Rider of the Year Duane Blair with third. In Category 3 Devin Bethune placed fifth in the final tally. EVCpM placed riders on the podium in nearly every road race entered in 2007 with stand-outs being Richard Hake, Dan Schuldt, and Allan Walton in Category 5; and John Spray, Devin Bethune, and Duane Blair in Category 4. Off-road, EVCpM had a great year as well. With consistent top finishes in Sport 45+, Tim Powell again medaled at year’s end in the Psycowpath series. Jon Downey also finished in the top five in Beginner Clydesdale in the final standings. EVCpM promoted four riders in 2007 – Devin Bethune to Category 3 and Dan Schuldt to Category 4 on the road and Jon Downey and Jamie Bachmann each to Sport. For 2008, the Club will again promote the Maskenthine XC Classic, the Nebraska State Time Trial and the Norfolk Classic. The Classic will include the 2008 Nebraska State Criterium on the downtown Norfolk course. New this year is a Criterium in Norfolk as part of the Nebraska Cycling Association Spring Training Series. Behind the scenes, Elkhorn Valley Cycling is quite involved in promoting cycling both locally and across the state. The Club will again promote the Norfolk Race Series of time trials, criteriums, and MTB races. The series is now in its 5th year and going strong. The Club has several USA Cycling-certified race officials on staff. These folks were very active in 2007. Finally, club members are a part of the backbone of cycling in Nebraska: the Nebraska Cycling Association. Jon Downey is the NCA secretary while Dan Spray serves as the NE area representative and Dan Schuldt as the Tri-Cities rep. In 2008, the goal of the race team is to support its members to reach their own fullest potential as cyclists and racers. A secondary goal is to take home at least one Rider of the Year and Psycowpath series championship. The focus will be on getting riders promoted and being a professional and conscientious team. The 2008 Elkhorn Valley Cycling powered by Monster Race Team includes: Dan Spray (team leader,) Joe Savoie, Devine Bethune, Allan Walton, Tim Powell, Dan Schuldt, Jerry Arnold, Shannon Sullivan, Todd Jochum, Tricia Faimon, Jamie Bachmann, Richard Hake, Scott Blair, Cody Cleveland, Duane Blair, John Spray, Brian Tangen, and Jon Downey. 2008 sponsors are Monster Energy, Madison County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, Doc Surber, Connecting Point Computer Center, Elkhorn Valley Bank, Downtown Coffee Company, Heartland Physical Therapy, DataCC, Authier Miller Pape Eyecare Consultants, Bank First, E-Z Kitchens, Vern Hjorth – Madison County Sheriff, and Behlen Manufacturing.
