U.S. National Team, Five American Pro Teams set for Official Olympic Test Event

Colorado Springs, Colo. - Eighteen Americans are set to compete in the "Good Luck Beijing" 2007-08 UCI Track Cycling World Cup Classic in Beijing, China this weekend, Dec. 7-9.   

The U.S. National Team and five American UCI-sanctioned professional track teams are among the 44 nations and 69 total teams set to compete in the season's second major international event that factors into Olympic qualification. The tournament has attracted a total of 376 cyclists, down from the 395 participants who entered the first-round race in Sydney last week, but still shattering the previous track World Cup participation record of 249 set last season.  

Named to the U.S. National Team by USA Cycling was a seven-member squad: Michael Friedman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Slipstream-Chipotle), Giddeon Massie (Colorado Springs, Colo./T-Town Express), Colby Pearce (Boulder, Colo./Cody Racing), Taylor Phinney (Boulder, Colo./ Slipstream-Chipotle), Sarah Hammer (Temecula, Calif./OUCH Pro Cycling), Christen King (Huntington Beach, Calif./South Bay Wheelmen) and Jennie Reed (Kirkland, Wash./Momentum Cycling).

The five professional teams scheduled to participate in the World Cup opener include the Cody Racing Team, Momentum Cycling, South Bay Wheelmen, Verducci Breakaway Racing and Proman Racing Team.

The Cody Racing Team will consist solely of Kenny Williams (Kenmore, Wash.), while Dotsie Bausch (Irvine, Calif.), Adam Duvendeck (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Bobby Lea (Mertztown, Pa.) will comprise Momentum Cycling's roster. 

David McCook (Mountain View, Calif.), Kele Murdin (Kenmore, Wash.) and Shelley Olds (Saratoga, Calif.) will compete for the Proman Racing Team while the Verducci Breakaway Racing squad will feature former USA Cycling National Criterium Champion Theresa Cliff-Ryan (Cedar Springs, Mich.) along with Liz Reap (Jim Thorpe, Pa.).  Neva Day (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Becky Quinn (Quakertown, Pa.) will round out the rosters, riding for the South Bay Wheelmen. 

The World Cup in Beijing is the second of four UCI Track World Cup Classics.  The race will also serve as the official Olympic Test Event and is being held on the Olympic track in west Beijing's Laoshan Velodrome.  The World Cup Classics will also include stops in Los Angeles in January and Denmark in February.
