U.S. National Team, Seven American Pro Teams set for First Major International Event of 2007-08 Season
Colorado Springs, Colo. - Twenty Americans are set to compete in the opening round of the 2007-08 UCI Track Cycling World Cup Classics in Sydney this weekend, Nov. 30 – Dec. 2.
The U.S. National Team and seven American UCI-sanctioned professional track teams are among the 48 nations and 23 trade teams set to compete in the season’s first major international event that factors into Olympic qualification.
Named to the U.S. National Team by USA Cycling was a seven-member squad: Adam Duvendeck (Santa Barbara, Calif./Momentum), Brad Huff (Fair Grove, Mo./Slipstream-Chipotle), Bobby Lea (Mertztown, Pa./Toyota-United), Giddeon Massie (Colorado Springs, Colo./T-Town Express), Dotsie Bausch (Irvine, Calif./Colavita-Sutter Home-Cooking Light), Liz Reap (Jim Thorpe, Pa./T-Town Express) and Becky Quinn (Quakertown, Pa./South Bay Wheelmen).
The seven professional teams scheduled to participate in the World Cup opener include the Cody Racing Team, Momentum Cycling, Ouch Pro Cycling, South Bay Wheelmen, Team Slipstream presented by Chipotle, Verducci Breakaway Racing and Proman Racing Team.
Representing the Ouch Pro Cycling Team is two-time defending World Champion in the women’s 3-kilometer individual pursuit, Sarah Hammer (Temecula, Calif.).
The Cody Racing Team will consist of Michael Blatchford (Cypress, Calif.), 2004 U.S. Olympic Team member Colby Pearce (Boulder, Colo.) and Kenny Williams (Kenmore, Wash.).
Athens Olympian Jennie Reed (Kirkland, Wash.) will be the sole representative of the Momentum Cycling Team while Neva Day (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Christen King (Huntington Beach, Calif.) comprise the South Bay Wheelmen’s roster.
Team Slipstream presented by Chipotle will feature 17-year-old Taylor Phinney (Boulder, Colo.), who captured an elite national title last month in his first-ever competitive track race, and Michael Friedman (Pittsburgh, Pa.).
David McCook (Mountain View, Calif.), Shelley Olds (Saratoga, Calif.) and Kele Murdin (Kenmore, Wash.) will compete for the Proman Racing Team while the Verducci Breakaway Racing squad will feature former USA Cycling National Criterium Champion Theresa Cliff-Ryan (Cedar Springs, Mich.).
The World Cup opener in Sydney is the first of four UCI Track World Cup Classics which also include the official Olympic Test Event the following weekend on the Olympic velodrome in Beijing, Dec. 7-9, as well as stops in Los Angeles in January and Denmark in February.
