Bellevue, NE - Brad Sullivan (Localcycling.com) wasted no time saturday establishing himself as the rider to watch for the 2007 Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series with a win in the Men's 1/2/3 race at the series opener at Swanson Park.

The Overland Park, KS resident held off teammate, Mark Studnicki in the 60-minute contest, who managed a second place finish, which set him up for first place in the Points Competition after two events. Early on, local cyclo-cross stalwart, Tony Wilhelm (HRRC-TREK) surged to the front establishing a blistering pace, which broke the field a part in just a couple of laps. Midway through the race though, Wilhelm began to drift back through the field eventually dropping out.

"That's a first," joked Studnicki. "My name before Wilhelm's in the results."

Kidding aside, Studnicki built upon a solid saturday performance to do battle with Wilhelm in sunday's Omaha CX Weekend finale. The 1.25 mile course was run in reverse from the previous day's racing, which provided faster lap times and more opportunity for smaller groups to stay together. The race selction came early again after only two laps, with Sullivan, Studnicki and Wilhelm moving away from the field. With five laps to go, Wilhelm attacked through the sand pit dropping Sullivan, but unable to shake Studnicki. For the remainder of the race, the duo took digs at each other before resigning themselves to a sprint. The winding finish stretch forced the riders to battle for position to have any chance for the win. As the two approached the final chicane, Studnicki grabbed position and with a quick look over his shoulder rolled over the line ahead of Wilhelm.

The Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series continues November 17-18 in Lincoln with the Nebraska SOBE No Fear CX Weekend.

Cyclo-cross Race Categories

There have been some questions regarding the cyclo-cross race categories and where riders should line-up on race day to maximize their competition experience. Here are suggested guidelines for the Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series:

Men 1/2/3  = Road Cat. 1/2/3 or MTB Expert

Men 3 = Road 3 or 4 or MTB Sport

Women 1/2/3 = Road Cat. 1/2/3 or MTB Expert/Sport

Women 4 = Road 4 or MTB Beginner, or first-time cyclo-cross racer.

Men Masters 35+/45+ = any race category as long as you meet the age requirement. Not recommended for first-time racers.
