Norfolk, NE - The second in the Northeast Nebraska triple crown of racing is history and was truly “Classic.” After a successful Nebraska State Time Trial Championship, Elkhorn Valley Cycling powered by Monster promoted the 2nd Annual Norfolk Classic presented by Monster Energy offering racers great courses in an omnium structure. The final in event triple is Psycowpath #7: The Maskenthine XC Classic August 11 at Maskenthine Lake north of Stanton.

After Saturday’s wide-open time trial and hilly road race, Sunday offered a technical criterium in the heart of downtown Norfolk. With lots of right and left hand turns and a blisteringly fast finish line straightaway, the course drew rave reviews from riders and spectators alike.

The morning opened with Cat 5 men. Sean Kennedy (Team Kaos) took home the win in the combined field and in the Open category. In Men’s 5 55+, Elkhorn Valley Cycling rider Richard Hake remains undefeated for 2007 with another win in the crit and an omnium first place.

Women riders ran a combined Cat 4 and Open race where Morgan Chaffin (Team Kaos) won in front of her hometown audience. Lindsey Heim took the Women 4 category.

Men’s Master took to the downtown course next. Craig Schmidt (Lincoln Plating/Lemond), dave Rogers (Team Kaos), and Fred Galata (Omaha Velo) took first in the 35+, 45+, and 55+ categories respectively.

Pro 1/2 and Men 3 saw Powerade/IF rider Cody McCollough lead for the majority of the race and take the win. Cody went 3 for 3 with first place finish in each leg of the omnium.

The final race of the day was a hard-fought 45-minute race of Men’s Category 4 riders. Devin Bethune (Elkhorn Valley), Dustin Bakker (Brookings Cycling) and Justin Maresh (Team Kaos) fought it out in front for the entire race. The bell lap was preceded by a “Gambler’s Prime” for cash from the crowd of enthusiastic spectators. John Spray of Elkhorn Valley Cycling won the jackpot. In the end, Bakker was first, followed by Maresh and Bethune.

Final yellow jersey winners were Cody McCullough (1/2), Mark Mettler (Minneota Cycling Team) in Cat 3, Justin Maresh (Cat 4), Fred Galata (Men’s Master Combined), and Morgan Chaffin (Women Open).

With only one unfortunate crash in the road race, the weekend was a spectacular success with racers and spectators.
