Photo John Peterson Reichardt finished sixth in the Saturday morning, 13-mile time trial around Branched Oak Lake, :31 off of the race lead held by 2-time defending champion, Kevin Nicol (Tokyo Joe's), who clocked in at 0:29:05 to take the Chipotle leader's jersey.
In the afternoon road race, which was cut to 60 miles to accommodate venue restrictions, Reichardt's Bang Salon/HART squad provided the aggressive cover for the Colorado rider to launch a final lap attack that only Jon Tarkington (Vitamin Cottage) and teammate, Dan Porter could match. With only one teammate riding in support, Nicol battled to limit his losses finishing in a chase group 1:41 back. The breakaway effort catapulted Tarkington into second place overall heading into Sunday's circuit race.
"I knew it would be about the time trial," said Reichardt. "We had to make something happen in the road race, if we expected to have a chance. We got the right combination off and my team defended well."
The third and final stage provided little opportunity for Nicol to chip away at Reichardt's adavantage. Early in the 60-minute contest, Brad White (Team Einstein/MOB Cyclery) jumped away from the field building a :30 lead by the midway point of the race. Despite a few prime laps, no other breaks were sustained. White was eventually caught with a lap to go and the field sprint was won by Team X rider, Chris Hall of Lenexa, KS.
Reichardt finished the two day, three stage event in 4:01:45. Ian Gray (Team Kaos) was the best placed Nebraska rider finishing in 11th place, at 3:12 back.
