Metro area cyclists were greeted with one of the best days of the year for the opening  weekend of the MetrO! Mountain Bike Challenge.  Families from around the region spent Sunday afternoon enjoying the Lake Manawa trail system with tons of mountain biking and post race hot dogs and soda. Jeffrey Hofer, Sherri Tompkin and Nick Limpach brought home the wins in the beginner junior, women and men's categories.  Hofer's time would have placed him 15th in men's race!

The next event saw the 4-8 and 9-12 year old kids square off.  The racing was intense but everyone rolled home with a smile on their face.

In the Intermediate women's and men's category Nicole Koch and Nick Barber were victorious.  Kevin Wilkins and Roxanne Abbott topped the timing sheets in the Advanced Class.

The next round of the MetrO! Mountain Bike Challenge presented by the Midwest Cycling Community will be at Swanson park in Bellevue on June 30-July 1 with FREE mountain bike demos on Saturday and racing on Sunday. Visit www.metrombc.blogspot.com for more details on the entire series.

2008 E’tape Du Tour

This year was supposed to be easier. I suppose in terms of mileage and total elevation gain, it was. Our route from Pau over the Tourmalet and then to the top of Hautacam was 108 miles with 11,600 feet of climbing. The past couple of years our routes have been from 125-150 miles with 13,000 to 14,000 feet of climbing and we have ridden in extreme heat conditions. This swung us to the other end of the spectrum. Hypothermia!

"Your from Nebraska?" the gal at medical check in asked. "Yes" Steve replied. "So you’re taking the high altitude medication Diamox then?" she asked. "No" Steve replied, having never heard of it. "Oh Boy!" she said with a tone of amazement and worry. "Good Luck!"
