The opening round of the MetrO! Mountain Bike Challenge presented by the Midwest Cycling Community kicks off this weekend, April 13-15. So grab the family and come out for a fun day at the Lake Manawa trails.

The weekend will kick off Friday evening with a Ladies Night Out clinic at the Trek Bicycle Store of Omaha, 7214 Jones St., from 7-9pm.  Ross Rushin of Trek's WSD Fit for Women Demo Tour will be presenting "How to prepare for your next event".  Refreshments will be served along with special in store discounts on clothing and accessories.

Saturday, come out to the Lake Manawa trails for a FREE bike demo. Trek's WSD Fit for Women Demo Tour will be on hand with tons of Trek, Gary Fisher and Lemond road and mountain bikes. The Highgear Bicycle Store and the Trek Store will have demo's available for men too. Choose a bike from Trek's solid line of Fuel EX models as well as Gary Fisher 29'r hardtails and full suspensions or Yeti cycles 575's.  The demo will run from 10am-2pm. In addition to the Demo, the MWCC will be offering a women's mountain bike skills clinic starting at 10am. This was a big hit last year so don't miss the second edition. Learn proper cornering technique and obstacle crossing. Sunday's course will be marked too so you can tune up your skills for the following days race.

The MetrO! Mountain Bike Challenge will kick off Sunday at 1:00pm (registration opens at 12:00pm). Entry is only $10 and no license is required. All paid entrants will receive an event water bottle and pair of socks. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 in each category. Mom or dad race free with each entered child. This is a great event to see if racing is for you. If you love it, take the leap and join us May 5th for the second round of the Psycowpath series at Swanson park in Bellevue.

Kent McNeill along with a few others have been busy the last month and a half. France last month and Leadville 100 this month. Kent was kind enough to regale us with his account of their adventures.

2008 E’tape Du Tour

This year was supposed to be easier. I suppose in terms of mileage and total elevation gain, it was. Our route from Pau over the Tourmalet and then to the top of Hautacam was 108 miles with 11,600 feet of climbing. The past couple of years our routes have been from 125-150 miles with 13,000 to 14,000 feet of climbing and we have ridden in extreme heat conditions. This swung us to the other end of the spectrum. Hypothermia!

"The Race Across The Sky" Leadville Trail 100

"Your from Nebraska?" the gal at medical check in asked. "Yes" Steve replied. "So you’re taking the high altitude medication Diamox then?" she asked. "No" Steve replied, having never heard of it. "Oh Boy!" she said with a tone of amazement and worry. "Good Luck!"
