December 10, 2006 Leavenworth, KS - The 2006 Kansas Cyclocross Championship was contested on the hilly Leavenworth High  School venue. A fresh course utilizing plenty of off camber grass, challenging runs and sand was put together by promoter Chris Locke.

The air temperature was mild, but riders faced strong winds from the south on some of the straights as well as patches of left over ice under the shadows of the tree lined section.

Steve Tilford added another championship to his many palmares. Even though  this course featured a technical section winding around a small pond, Mr. Tilford avoided a dip like he entertained the prior weekend at the nearby KLM UCI race.

Riders in Kansas and Missouri still have a few events on their schedule. Those not heading to Nationals have opportunity to race December 15th and 16th near Wichita at the Lake Afton CX and again on January 7th at the Grote Prijs Shawnee, the final race of the Maxxis Series. Information on these events is available at www.localcycling.com

Featured Stories

Kent McNeill along with a few others have been busy the last month and a half. France last month and Leadville 100 this month. Kent was kind enough to regale us with his account of their adventures.

2008 E’tape Du Tour

This year was supposed to be easier. I suppose in terms of mileage and total elevation gain, it was. Our route from Pau over the Tourmalet and then to the top of Hautacam was 108 miles with 11,600 feet of climbing. The past couple of years our routes have been from 125-150 miles with 13,000 to 14,000 feet of climbing and we have ridden in extreme heat conditions. This swung us to the other end of the spectrum. Hypothermia!

"The Race Across The Sky" Leadville Trail 100

"Your from Nebraska?" the gal at medical check in asked. "Yes" Steve replied. "So you’re taking the high altitude medication Diamox then?" she asked. "No" Steve replied, having never heard of it. "Oh Boy!" she said with a tone of amazement and worry. "Good Luck!"
