Over 650 National Titles in Road, Track, Mountain Bike, BMX and Cyclo-cross on the Line

Colorado Springs, Colo. (December 11, 2006)—Over 650 national titles will be on the line next year as USA Cycling announced its 2007 National Championship Calendar Monday.

The 13-race calendar offers an opportunity for competitive cyclists of all ages, abilities and disciplines to compete for a coveted stars-and-stripes jersey that signifies a national champion.  In 2007, USA Cycling will feature national championship events in the five recognized disciplines of competitive cycling – road, mountain, track, BMX and cyclo-cross.

A look now at the dates, locations and other notable items on the 2007 USA Cycling National Championship Calendar:

USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships

Lawrence, Kansas – May 10-13

The calendar once again kicks off with the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships hosted by the University of Kansas in Lawrence.  Scheduled for Mother’s Day weekend, May 10-13, collegiate riders who represent many of the 283 collegiate cycling teams in the United States will return to the nation’s heartland for the third consecutive year.  The University of Colorado will look to defend its Division I crown, while Whitman College will compete for its second consecutive Division II title in the only collegiate sport that factors men’s and women’s results together to determine a national champion.  Six individual titles will also be up for grabs as men and women in each division will compete for road race, criterium and overall omnium honors.  Teams will also have a chance to prove their depth in the team time trial event.

USA Cycling BMX National Championships

Pontiac, Mich. – June 9-10

Now an Olympic sport, BMX racing will be featured at the USA Cycling BMX National Championships in Pontiac, Michigan, June 9-10 where elite and amateur athletes will compete for national titles in the 20” and Cruiser Class categories.  The national championships will also provide an opportunity for riders to qualify for the world championships in July.

USA Cycling Junior Track National Championships

Colorado Springs, Colo. – June 30-July 7

The USA Cycling Junior Track National Championships will be held at the 7-Eleven Velodrome in Colorado Springs, Colo. June 30-July 7.  It’s here that the next generation of elite-level track cyclists between the ages of 10 and 18 will compete in various sprint and endurance-oriented events.  For the 17 and 18-year-olds, the event will serve as a qualifier for the 2007 UCI Junior Road and Track World Championships in Aguascalientes, Mexico.  At 6,000 feet, the conditions in Colorado Springs will closely mirror those at the 6,700-foot Aguascalientes.

USA Cycling National Festival at Seven Springs

Champion, Pa. – July 5-17

For the second consecutive season, the majority of national titles on the road will be decided at Seven Springs Resort in Champion, Pa. The Pittsburgh-area destination in Southeastern Pennsylvania will again play host to the USA Cycling National Festival at Seven Springs as juniors, U23 athletes, elites and masters will compete in road races, time trials and criteriums July 5-17.  The scenic and selective courses in a rural setting will again be partially responsible for determining the outcome of the races.  Changes for the 2007 edition include a new time trial course and new road courses for most of the junior categories and all master categories.  The first week of the schedule will feature junior and U23 events, while elites and masters will highlight the second week of racing.

USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships*

West Dover, Vt. – July 17-22

After three years on the West Coast since a single-day format was introduced in 2004, the USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships will be held at Mount Snow Resort in West Dover, Vt. July 17-22. A classic venue for competitors and spectators alike, Mount Snow’s reputation as one of the top mountain bike destinations in the country and experience hosting National Mountain Bike Series and UCI World Cup events make it an ideal location.  Off-road cyclists will again be offered a wide variety of events as cross country and short track cross country racing will be on the agenda for the endurance riders and downhill, 4-cross and super-downhill will cater to the gravity riders.  Roughly 2,500 racers, including juniors, U23 athletes, amateurs and professionals, will be on hand at Mount Snow to compete for those stars-and-stripes jerseys.  Mount Snow will also be the host venue for the 2008 national championships.

USA Cycling 24-Hour Mountain Bike National Championships

Wausau, Wis. – July 28-30

Ultra-endurance mountain bikers will return to Wausau, Wis. for the USA Cycling 24-Hour Mountain Bike National Championships July 28-30 where 9-Mile County Forest will play host for the second consecutive year.  Categories include men’s solo, women’s solo, men’s team, women’s team, junior team and master 30+ team. Twenty additional non-national championship categories will also be offered as part of the annual 24 Hours of 9-Mile event.

USA Cycling Professional and Elite Criterium National Championships

Downers Grove, Ill. – August 19

One of the staples on the U.S. racing circuit, the USA Cycling Professional and Elite Criterium National Championships return to its unofficial home of Downers Grove, Ill. August 19. The pro criterium championships will feature world-class athletes as they compete on the infamous figure-8 course in arguably the year’s most exciting and prestigious event for sprinters.  The USA Cycling Professional Criterium National Championships is one of three national championship races on the inaugural USA Cycling Professional Tour in 2007.  Elite men and women will also race for national titles in Downers Grove.

USA Cycling Master Track National Championships

Trexlertown, Pa. – August 27-31

The USA Cycling Master Track National Championships will be held at the Lehigh Valley Velodrome in Trexlertown, Pa. August 27-31.   Competitors age 30 and up will again compete for individual and team titles in sprint and endurance events at arguably the most famous velodrome in the country.

USA Cycling Professional Road and Time Trial National Championships

Greenville, S.C. – September 1-3

The USA Cycling Professional Road and Time Trial National Championships return to Greenville, S.C. for the second consecutive year September 1-3.  Also part of the USA Cycling Professional Tour, both the time trial and the road race will feature top American pros who spend their season racing at the sport’s highest level in both Europe and the United States.  Last year’s road race victor, George Hincapie, will be looking to close out the season with another win in front of a hometown crowd while world championship silver medalist David Zabriskie will defend his time trial title.

USA Cycling Collegiate Track National Championships 

Date & Location TBD

Slated for September, the USA Cycling Collegiate Track National Championships has not yet confirmed an exact date or location.  Venues are under consideration and a formal announcement should be made by the end of 2006.

USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships*

Carson, Calif. – October 3-7

For the third consecutive year, the USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships return to Southern California and the ADT Event Center velodrome at the Home Depot Center in suburban Los Angeles. Nearly 400 competitors will race on North America’s only indoor velodrome of international standards for national titles in individual and team sprint and endurance events.

USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships

Banner Elk, N.C. – October 26-28

Hosted by perennial collegiate cycling powerhouse Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C. October 26-28, the USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships will once again award national titles in the four core disciplines of mountain bike racing – cross country, short track cross country, downhill and dual slalom.  All of the events will be held on the campus of Lees-McRae College with the exception of the downhill competition which will take place at nearby Sugar Mountain Resort.  Once again, individual and team titles will be on the line in the Division I and Division II ranks.  With a two-year deal in place, the 2008 edition will also be hosted by Lees-McRae College.

USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships

Kansas City, Kan. – Date TBD

After two years on the West Coast, followed by two years on the East Coast, the USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships move to the Midwest for 2007 and 2008.  Wyandotte County Park will be the host venue as junior, elite, master and collegiate riders will have one last chance at capturing a stars-and-stripes jersey in 2007.  A date has not yet been confirmed, however a mid-December date is likely.

*Elite Tandem Track Championships will he held in conjunction with the stand-alone “Tandemonium” event at the Lehigh Valley Velodrome July 6.

*The marathon discipline of the mountain bike national championships will not be held at Mount Snow Resort.  An alternate date and venue is currently under consideration and will be announced upon confirmation.
