Webster City, IA - On Sunday October 8, 2006 the Iowa Cyclocross Championship Series will pay a visit to Kendall Young Park in Webster City, IA. This will mark the first time there has been a cycloross race in Webster City or this area. The Team 14 Cross Challenge will get under way at 11:00 when the Juniors, Masters, and Beginners will take to the course followed by the Women’s Open and Category 4 Men at Noon. The feature race of the day will take the course at 1:00 where the Men’s Elite Open will do battle for a $1000 cash purse.

Cyclocross is a growing discipline in competitive cycling and the Iowa Series is evidence of this. The series is made up of eight races that are held in Newton, the Quad Cities and Webster City. The Iowa Cyclocross Championship Series has had riders from Missouri, Kansas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Illinois in addition to the best riders in Iowa compete in the three events thus far in 2006.

Cyclocross is a spectator friendly sport that takes place in the fall and winter months. Spectators can view most of the course from one spot and the events are usually pretty high energy events that offer the spectator a fun atmosphere. Courses generally are on grass with a few technical sections, such as steep hills, wooden barriers, sand or muddy sections, that force riders off of their bikes to clear the obstacle on foot while carrying their bike.

The Team 14 Cross Challenge is being hosted by the MBWC Cycling Club and the Team 14 Productions Cycling Team. Information can be found at http://team14bikeraces.blogspot.com/

Kent McNeill along with a few others have been busy the last month and a half. France last month and Leadville 100 this month. Kent was kind enough to regale us with his account of their adventures.

2008 E’tape Du Tour

This year was supposed to be easier. I suppose in terms of mileage and total elevation gain, it was. Our route from Pau over the Tourmalet and then to the top of Hautacam was 108 miles with 11,600 feet of climbing. The past couple of years our routes have been from 125-150 miles with 13,000 to 14,000 feet of climbing and we have ridden in extreme heat conditions. This swung us to the other end of the spectrum. Hypothermia!

"Your from Nebraska?" the gal at medical check in asked. "Yes" Steve replied. "So you’re taking the high altitude medication Diamox then?" she asked. "No" Steve replied, having never heard of it. "Oh Boy!" she said with a tone of amazement and worry. "Good Luck!"
