Victory in Opening Stage Time Trial Gives Armstrong Overall Lead after Two Stages
Sibbe, Netherlands (September 6, 2006)—In her preparation for the upcoming 2006 UCI Road World Championships later this month, Kristin Armstrong (Boise, Idaho/Team Lipton) won the opening stage time trial at the Euregio Ladies Tour in the Netherlands Tuesday. After Wednesday’s second stage, Armstrong currently holds the overall lead.
The bronze medalist in the time trial at last year’s world championships, Armstrong clocked a winning time of 16 minutes and 12 seconds over the 12.2-kilometer course to beat runner-up Loes Gunnewijk of the Netherlands by 27 seconds.
In Wednesday’s stage two, a 94.5-kilometer trek from Kerkrade to Sibbe, Armstrong placed third behind stage winner Gunnewijk and second-place finisher Kate Bates of Australia.
With two stages remaining, Armstrong holds a 21-second advantage over Gunnewijk in the overall classification.
The race concludes with a 122-kilometer stage in Bilzen, Belgium on Friday.
The United States Cycling Team is currently making its final preparations for the UCI Road World Championships set for September 19-24 in Salzburg, Austria.
