Sharp dressed man Jon Randall takes stage 4! Photo: Mike Madcharo
Beatrice, Neb. – Lincoln’s Jon Randall of Lincoln Plating-Lemond won the final stage of the inaugural Monumental Memorial Cycling Weekend as Micheal Grabinger of Spearfish, S.D., took the overall victory.

An accomplished triathlete who is only a Category III racer, Grabinger won two of the race’s four stages. His victory in Sunday morning’s 20-mile time trial lifted him into the overall lead, which he added to with a victory in the late afternoon 52-mile road race.
“That’s the toughest day I’ve ever had in cycling,” Grabinger said. “I am kind of new at this, but I’ve never been in a race with winds like that. It was pretty brutal.”
The strong, steady winds that had plagued competitors in the race’s first two days subsided somewhat on Monday, though temperatures still reached into the low 90s.
Daniel Casper of Northfield, Minn., riding for GrandStay/Out N About Gear, finished second overall. Randall was third, 55 seconds behind Grabinger. The pair were part of a five-man breakaway that put more than seven minutes on the field in Sunday’s road race.
The overall standings remained unchanged after Monday’s criterium, despite aggressive racing by Team Kaos, which had three riders in the top 10 – but none in the top five - after a disasterous day on Sunday.
Kaos team leader Jarred Berger, the favorite to win the time trial, flatted at the turnaround point, then blew another tire in the road race and did not make the crucial break.
Feeling secure with his 36-second lead over second place, Grabinger said he set out with a different kind of motivation for the 75-minute criterium.
“There were a few other people who were with me in the break yesterday who did a lot of work and I wanted to help them out,” Grabinger said. “I had hoped to give them a good lead out for a time bonus, but unfortunately it didn’t work out.”

“I just wanted to be up front to be ready for an overall G.C. place, but then things opened up, so I just went for it,” Randell said.
In the women’s race, Linda Sone of Silver Cycling/Hollywood Racing teamed up with Team Kaos’ Morgan Chaffin to erase an eight-second deficit on Team Giant/Black Hills Domestiques’ Betsy Cordes and steal the overall with a victory in the 30-minute criterium.
With less than five laps remaining, Chaffin attacked and Sone followed. The two worked together to quickly build a 10-second lead that they stretched to 25 seconds by the finish. That advantage, plus a 10-second time bonus for the win, helped Sone beat Cordes by 27 seconds in the final standings.
