Formed in 2006, the Elkhorn Valley Cycling Club (EVCC) looks to create a resurgence of cycling interest in northeast Nebraska. Based out of Andrew Bicycle and Fitness in Norfolk, the USA Cycling-sanctioned group has members from all aspects of the sport. The club looks to hold several events this year including recreational rides, training rides on the new Maskentine Lake MTB trails (built and maintained by the club), the Norfolk Time Trial Series training races, and the Norfolk Classic Cycling Weekend.

The Norfolk Time Trial Series has been in existence since 2004 and launched the race careers of several top riders in Nebraska. Riders from all over the area are encouraged to attend. Racing is fast paced in a relaxed atmosphere. This year, racing starts April 19th and continues through September on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm. Race lengths are 10 and 18 miles.

The Norfolk Classic is a two-day race and is part of the Nebraska race series. It includes a road race through the Alps east of Norfolk, a time trial to the south, and a crit through historic downtown Norfolk.

The EVCC Race Team is preparing for a full year of racing. Preparations began in January with organized indoor training and individual outdoor training. Plans are to race in the majority of Nebraska road races this year as well as select events in surrounding states. Race team members include Duane Blair, Scott Blair, Cody Cleveland, Steve Cross, Pat Kester, Jeff Pape, Dan Spray, Johnathan Spray, Jesse Vincent, Jason Walsh, and Al Walton.

Flagship sponsors are Andrew Bicycle and Fitness and Cornhusker Auto of Norfolk. Other sponsors include Shimano, Dr. Jason Walsh, DataCC, Dr. Stephen Smith, Dr. Gary Alan Flower, Town and Country Insurance, Vern Hjorth – Madison County Sheriff, Albin Law Office, Authier-Miller-Pape Eyecare, Reflections Portraits, Walters Homes, Burger King, Trashcan Studios, Top Hat Services, and Joe Daily Coffee. Sponsors assisting with the Norfolk Classic are Affiliated Foods, Big Apple Bagel, Divots, Norfolk Lodge and Suites, New Victorian Inn, 180 Energy Drink, and Michelob Ultra.

The club’s web site, www.nencycling.org, is the source for more information about the club, race team, the Norfolk Time Trial Series, and the Norfolk Classic. Inquiries can also be made at Andrew Bicycle and Fitness at 309 Norfolk Ave, Norfolk, (402) 379-1441.
