Raymond, NE -- Tony Wilhelm (LBC/Highgear) soloed to victory in the final two races of the 2005 Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series at Branched Oak Lake, Area 1. The Nebraska transplant, who now resides in Shawnee, KS made quick work of the Monkeywrench Cycles Men's A fields moving to the front in the opening moments of the 60-minute races both days and staying at the sharp end of affairs. The weekend sweep made it four in a row for Wilhelm, who continues to be one of the strongest cyclo-cross riders in the Midwest.

Frigid temperatures gripped riders throughout the weekend, which made traversing the already icy and rock-hard course even more of a challenge. The familiar strong winds which typically torment cycling events at Branched Oak Lake were mysteriously absent all weekend. Despite the welcome respite, the mercury still could not break the 20-degree mark either day. The bone-chilling temps were especially rough for the day's early races, which inlcuded the Lincoln Bicycle Compmany Men's C and KRBK Law Men's Masters 45+.

"That's the good thing about 'cross though," mused LBC/Highgear rider, Steven Bowles, "you know exactly how long things are going to hurt!"

Other top finishers from the weekend's races included:

Saturday -- Thad Neil (Team 14/Pedro's) in Men's B, Randall Crist (BBC/The Bike Way) in Men's C, Matt Gersib (Monkeywrench Cycles) in Singlespeed, Stacey Hallman (Trek Store of KC) in the Women's race, Tom Price (TREK Store of KC) in Men 35+ and Men 45+.

Kent McNeill along with a few others have been busy the last month and a half. France last month and Leadville 100 this month. Kent was kind enough to regale us with his account of their adventures.

2008 E’tape Du Tour

This year was supposed to be easier. I suppose in terms of mileage and total elevation gain, it was. Our route from Pau over the Tourmalet and then to the top of Hautacam was 108 miles with 11,600 feet of climbing. The past couple of years our routes have been from 125-150 miles with 13,000 to 14,000 feet of climbing and we have ridden in extreme heat conditions. This swung us to the other end of the spectrum. Hypothermia!

"Your from Nebraska?" the gal at medical check in asked. "Yes" Steve replied. "So you’re taking the high altitude medication Diamox then?" she asked. "No" Steve replied, having never heard of it. "Oh Boy!" she said with a tone of amazement and worry. "Good Luck!"
