The Nebraska Cyclo-cross State Championship was another wet and muddy affair in what has been an already damp 2005 edition. Tony Wilhelm (LBC/Highgear) powered through a cold, bone-chilling rain to take  top honors in the Men's A race at the third round of the Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series saturday afternoon at Pioneers Park in Lincoln.

The former Nebraska resident and teammates, Jay Thomas and Sam Rosenau set a furious pace from the gun as the trio led the 18-rider field through an extended speed barrier section. After only two laps, Wilhelm distanced himself from the field with his lead never in doubt. Over a minute back, Thomas was joined by teammate Troy Krause and MonkeyWrench Cycles/KONA rider, Darin Schlake. The trio worked well together wary of the 2-man chase group of Adam Mills (HRRC/Maclaren) and Jon Randell (Lincoln Plating-Lemond). With Mills and Randell closing within :20, Schlake lifted the pace with only Krause able to match the acceleration. With Wilhelm already posting a convincing victory, the battle for the Nebraska State Championship was left between Schlake and Krause. In the final 200 meters, Schlake jumped hard with Krause settling for third overall and the second step on the state championship podium. Mills finished in fourth with Randell fifth and third for the state championship.

Other top finishers included: Thad Neil (Team 14/Pedro's) in Men's B, Randall Crist (BBC/Bike Way) in Men's C, Tyler Carmichael (LBC/Highgear) in Singlespeed, Stacey Hallman (TREK Store of KC) in Women's, Nathan Zubrod (LBC/Highgear) in Junior Men 16-18, Tom Price (TREK Store of KC) in Men Masters 35+ and 45+ and John Dean (LBC/Highgear) in Men Masters 55+.

The Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series continues Sunday with round 4 at Pioneers Park in Lincoln.

Kent McNeill along with a few others have been busy the last month and a half. France last month and Leadville 100 this month. Kent was kind enough to regale us with his account of their adventures.

2008 E’tape Du Tour

This year was supposed to be easier. I suppose in terms of mileage and total elevation gain, it was. Our route from Pau over the Tourmalet and then to the top of Hautacam was 108 miles with 11,600 feet of climbing. The past couple of years our routes have been from 125-150 miles with 13,000 to 14,000 feet of climbing and we have ridden in extreme heat conditions. This swung us to the other end of the spectrum. Hypothermia!

"Your from Nebraska?" the gal at medical check in asked. "Yes" Steve replied. "So you’re taking the high altitude medication Diamox then?" she asked. "No" Steve replied, having never heard of it. "Oh Boy!" she said with a tone of amazement and worry. "Good Luck!"
