Steve Tilford (HRRC-Specialized) picked up where he left off in the 2004 Nebraska Cyclo-cross State Championship with a win in Men's A race saturday afternoon at Standing Bear Lake in northwest Omaha.
Overcast skies opened up on the 19-rider field at the start and never let up throughout the 60-minute contest. From the gun, Tilford led the first lap with the field scrambling for position on the 1-mile course, which went from wet to treacherous within minutes of the start. Picking his way through the slick, off-camber turns, Tilford wavered momentarily on a short, steep descent. The mountain bike world champion recovered quickly, extending his advantage and eventually lapping the field. The battle behind for the final four podium spots raged with Tilford's teammate Bill Stolte taking second, Tony Willhelm (LBC/Highgear) third, Jay Thomas (LBC/Highgear) in fourth and Jesse Petersen (Monkeywrench Cycles/KONA) in fifth place. Other top finishers included: Troy Krause (LBC/Highgear) in Men B, Dean Parker (Team X) in Singlespeed, Stephen Beals in Men C, Stephen Songer (Team X) in Men Masters 35+, Tom Price (TREK Store of KC) in Men Masters 45+, John Dean (LBC/Highgear) in Men Masters 55+ and Catherine Walberg (Kenda) in the Women's race. The 2005 Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series continues Sunday with Round 2 at Standing Bear Lake in Omaha. Complete Results Check back for complete results and a weekend wrap-up on NebCycling. |
