Cool, crisp, breezy, blustery, rainy, peaceful, beautiful, perfect – all words that can describe the transitioning fall days. As the temperature slowly drops and the smell in the air changes, the constant buzz of insects, chirp of crickets and rustle of leaves continue a while longer at Lake Manawa State Park.
Soon, though, things will become quieter. The insects and crickets will disappear and the leaves will turn brilliant shades of red, yellow, orange and brown before they fall from the trees. Squirrels will busy themselves preparing for winter and gathering nuts. Monarch butterflies and birds will fly through the park on their journey south for the winter. The deer and turkeys will continue roaming about the park as usual. Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy this beautiful time of year at Lake Manawa. Bring a fishing pole or a football and take advantage of the park’s lake and spacious areas. Spend some time observing the wildlife, but please don’t disturb them or feed them. Refresh yourself with a brisk walk around the paved trail. If you’re interested in fall biking, the THOR (Trails Have Our Respect) mountain bike club will host a ride for bikers of all levels in honor of October’s Healthy Communities Month, as declared by the governor. Interested bikers of all levels are welcome to meet at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 9 at the mountain bike kiosk (bulletin board) near the Missouri River Ramp. It will be a great way to gain experience in the beautiful fall weather. In addition to other activities, an archery hunt in the park is scheduled from the beginning of October through the end of November to help control the deer herd. Be sure to note designated areas and posted signs while using the park’s trails and facilities. For more information about fall park events, contact the Lake Manawa office at (712) 366-0220. |
