Many riders new to the sport of cyclo-cross are curious about what constitutes appropriate training. Whether your goal is to win the state championship or just be relatively competitive in the events, it is important to follow some sort of structured cyclo-cross training program to maximize performance and potential at the races.

Here is a sample training program from "Cyclo-cross Training & Technique" by Simon Burney :

Tue 20 min run, am. 60 min level 2 road ride, pm

Thu 20 min run, am. 60 min level 2 road ride, pm

Rest weeks would include three days of 60 minute Level I recovery rides, 20-minute running sessions on two days and 1 90-minute Level II ride.

Most riders come into the cyclo-cross season with solid base of fitness from a season on the road or racing mountain bikes. Cyclo-cross events range from 30-60 minutes in duration, so the specific power training outlined above will help prepare you for the short, intense efforts of a cyclo-cross race.

Kent McNeill along with a few others have been busy the last month and a half. France last month and Leadville 100 this month. Kent was kind enough to regale us with his account of their adventures.

2008 E’tape Du Tour

This year was supposed to be easier. I suppose in terms of mileage and total elevation gain, it was. Our route from Pau over the Tourmalet and then to the top of Hautacam was 108 miles with 11,600 feet of climbing. The past couple of years our routes have been from 125-150 miles with 13,000 to 14,000 feet of climbing and we have ridden in extreme heat conditions. This swung us to the other end of the spectrum. Hypothermia!

"Your from Nebraska?" the gal at medical check in asked. "Yes" Steve replied. "So you’re taking the high altitude medication Diamox then?" she asked. "No" Steve replied, having never heard of it. "Oh Boy!" she said with a tone of amazement and worry. "Good Luck!"
