Gretna — Jarred Berger of Team Kaos won his second state title of the cycling season by capturing the Cat. I-II division of the Nebraska time trial championship Saturday.

Berger joined teammates Morgan Chaffin (women's division) and Mark Brackenbury (Masters 35+) as state time trial champions for Team Kaos.

Berger covered the 20.32-mile course near the Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium in 44 minutes and 10 seconds, a 27.6 miles-per-hour average. In June, he won the state criterium championship at the Dave Babcook Memorial Stage Race.

Jeff Luedtke of Husker Road Club, who had won all three of the previous time trials on the same course, finished second, 1:15 slower than Berger. Team Kaos’ Marco Vasquez was third in 45:26.

"I went pretty hard the first half of it — out to the turnaround and back to the finish," Berger said. "But then I really slowed down on the third section for some reason. But at the end, I had enough."

surprise appearance,
finishing first overall
in the women's division
with an impressive 49:43.
Berger and the later starters of the field of 51 riders faced a slight headwind on the closing five-mile stretch of the out-back-and-out course near the Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium. Other than that, conditions were nearly ideal for the fourth and final race of the series.

State time trial champions in other categories were: Pierce’s Scott Blair (Cat. V), Lincoln’s Nate Elmer (Cat. IV), Mike Munson (Cat. III), Mike Melton (masters 45+) and Steve Meyer (masters 55+).
