Darin Schlake (Highgear/LBC Racing) simply rode away from the field to secure his first victory of the off-road season at the Hitchcock MTB Challenge at Hitchcock Nature Center near Crescent, IA this past saturday.

Schlake covered the 4-lap Expert Open event in 1:39:07 with Monkey Wrench Cycles rider, Jesse Petersen crossing the line nearly 2:00 back at 1:41:05. Highgear teammate Greg Shimonek rounded out the top three at 1:44:31. Series points leader, Stephen Jarrett lost ground after pulling out of the race due to heat exhaustion. In the opening lap, Jarrett set a blistering attack heading into a section of singletrack only to lose control and go off-course. Shortly after, Jarrett fell victim to the extreme heat and humidity while Schlake powered away for the win.

"It was not like he attacked," said Petersen. "He just rode us off his wheel. Schlake is super strong right now."

Other top finishers included: Mike Bartels (Revolution Cycling) in Expert Men 35+, Matt Wills (Cycle Works/Moose's Tooth) in Singlespeed Open, Robert Miller in Sports Clydedale, Scott Nechkash (Bike Masters) in Sport Men 45+, Kingdon Hawes (Cycling Club of Nebraska) in Sport Men 35+, Andrew Keffer (Omaha Velo Club) in Sport Men Open, Leah Rabideau (Bike Masters) in Junior Girls 13-15, Nathan Zubrod (Cycling Club of Nebraska) in Junior Men 16-18, Geoffrey Nelson (Lincoln Plating-Lemond) in Junior Men 13-15, Richard Kumke (Revolution Cycling) in Junior Men 12 & under, Donna Holmes in Beginner Women Open, Rod Kumke (Revolution Cycling) in Beginner Clydesdale, Rick Isham (Cycling Club of Nebraska) in Beginner Men 45+, William Schaffer in Beginner Men 35+ and Aaron Grady (Bike Masters) in Beginner Men Open.
