Ponca, NE -- Cam Kirkpatrick (QCP-TREK) powered away from a strong field of off-road competitors to take first place at Psycowpath MTB #3: Ponca's Revenge at Ponca SRA this past Saturday.

The Iowa resident is a regular in the Nebraska off-road scene, with this victory his first of the 2005 series. Kirkpatrick covered the 4-lap, 20-mile event in 1:30:48. Darin Schlake (Highgear/LBC) crossed in second place at 1:33:09 with Jesse Petersen third at 1:34:43.

The re-scheduled Ponca event, which was rained out in June drew a respectable field of (75) riders. A combination of technical descents, challenging climbs and tight singletrack, the Ponca circuit is one of the more taxing courses.

"I feel like I fell down a flight of stairs," mused Cody McCullough (Lincoln Plating-Lemond), who won the Expert Masters 35+ event.

Other top finishers included: Matt Wills (Cycle Works-Moose's Tooth) in the Singlespeed Open race, Tom Baumgarten in Sports Clydesdale, Doug Larson (Bike Masters) in Sport Masters 45+, Jason Alread (Rasmussen) in Sport Masters 35+, Samuel Johnson (Super D Cycles) in Sport Open, Leah Rabideau (Bike Masters) in Junior Women, Nathan Zubrod (Highgear/LBC) in Junior Men 16-18, Geoff Nelson in Junior Men 13-15, Gary Zoucha (Highgear/LBC) in Beginner Clydesdale, Rick Isham (Highgear/LBC) in Sport Masters 45+, William Schaeffer in Beginner Masters 35+ and Aaron Grady (Bike Masters) in Beginner Men Open.

With three more races in the 2005 series, the points races are heating up across all categories.
With his first place finish at Ponca, Kirkpatrick has jumped up into second place overall in the Expert Men Open division. The ever-popular singlespeed category has a tie for first place between Matt Wills (Cycle Works-Moose's Tooth) and Troy Nelson (Benson Bike Club). Complete and updated Psycowpath Point Standings are now available on NebCycling. Questions regarding the point standings should be sent to john@channelonemarketing.com

The 2005 Psycowpath MTB Series presented by the Nebraska Lottery continues Saturday, August 20, 2005 with the "Hitchcock MTB Challenge" at the Hitchcock Nature Center near Crescent, IA.
