Chris Spence won the Point Beer Tour of Alpine Valley road race at the International Cycling Classic in East Troy Wisconsin Monday morning. Racing in typical Spence fashion, Chris and two others broke away in the first lap of the five lap, fifty mile Masters 30 + race. But the group stayed together for only half of the first lap and Chris rode away to a 2 minute solo victory in the most grueling road course of the nine race Masters 30+ series.
The Point Beer Tour of Alpine Valley Road Race provides the first opportunity for strong climbers to assert their presence at the International Cycling Classic. The riders will loosen their legs with a steep neutralized climb out of the Alpine Valley Resort before entering a 9.7-mile loop that features rolling hills and two crossings of a steep-sided river valley.
Racing against perhaps the top masters fields in the country, Spence had been third and second in previous editions. Today was a well deserved victory for the former four time Nebraska State Champion. And what a way to win: on the hardest course against the toughest field.
