Omaha, Neb. -- HRRC/Bike Source’s Brian Jensen of Lawrence, Kan., won the rain-shortened Elmwood Park Pro I-II circuit race Saturday to solidify his overall lead after the first day of the Dave Babcook Memorial Stage Race. Jensen also won the 800-meter prologue time trial Saturday morning at Hummel Park over Omahan Stephen Jarrett before soloing away from the field late in the 55-mile evening race.

More than 125 racers are competing in the fifth edition of the Dave Babcook Memorial Stage Race. The race concludes today with Old Market Criterium, which doubles as the Nebraska State Championship. Jensen broke away with Team Kaos’ Jarred Berger and gained nearly 45 seconds with fewer than 15 laps remaining in the 34-lap race. But Berger couldn’t maintain Jensen’s wicked pace, and eventually drifted back to the field as Jensen widened his lead. With threatening skies and lightning strikes dotting the skies, race officials decided to shorten the race by eight laps. The move hardly diminished Jensen’s lead, which was 1:00 by the finish. Coupled with a pair of mid-race 10-bonuses he picked up, Jensen wound up with a total of 35 seconds in bonus time, counting the 15 seconds he earned for the win. Jensen’s HRRC/Bike Source teammate, Steve Tilford, won the field sprint for second. Terry Beenken of All9Yards.com/Ralph Henderson, finished third. Bellevue’s Jon Randell was the highest-placed Nebraska finisher in the Pro I-II circuit race, finishing fifth.

Team Kaos’ Steven Muhle had an outstanding performance for the host team. The Lincolnite was a triple winner on the day, finishing first in the Masters 35+ time trial, the Masters 35+ circuit race and the Category III circuit race.

In the Women's Open division, Megan Hottman of Highgear/LBC Racing was equally as dominating, winning both the time trial and circuit races.

The morning prologue time trial up a series of switchbacks at Hummel Park lived up to its pre-race billing. Challenging racers with a leg-breaking 10 percent grade, only Jensen managed to break the 90-second barrier. His 1:27 clocking was three seconds faster than Jarrett and Tilford. Berger was fourth in 1:31, followed by Beenken’s 1:35 and Randell’s 1:37 clocking. Three other competitive times were turned in by racers in other categories. Category III racers Mike Campie of Revolution Cycling Team blazed to a 1:33, which would have placed him fifth in the Pro-I-II standings. And Louis Waugaman of xXx Racing of West Des Moines, Iowa, clocked a 1:34 in the men's 45+ division, along with Cat. III Jeremy Reimer of Lincoln Plating-Lemond.
