The 2005 Psycowpath MTB Series presented by the Nebraska Lottery is underway after a windy opener at Swanson Park in Bellevue this past saturday.
Over (130) cyclists lined up for the "River City Shootout," including an impressive (59) participants in the 'Beginner' class events.
The 4.5 mile race course at Swanson Park features a healthy mix of singletrack, log jumps and tight, technical sections, which definitely favor local riders familiar with this veritable mountain bike playground.
"It makes a big difference if you know this course," said Jesse Reints (TREK/Nature Valley) who finished second in the Expert Open competition.
BEGINNER (1 lap) The largest group of the day provided the most exciting race start with 59riders battling for first position as they completed a short parade loop prior to dropping into the singletreack. Despite the hectic opening, the 1-lap event went off without incident. Top finishers included Andrew Clark (Beginner Men), Jacqueline Wethor (Beginner Women), Todd Reznicek (Beginner 35+), Rick Isham (Beginner 45+) and John Martin (Beginner Clydesdale).
JUNIORS (1 lap) An impressive group of young men and women went pull for pull with the adults completing 1-lap of the challenging Swanson Park circuit. First place honors went to Joshua Beasley (Men 16-18), Micah Pfeiffer (Men 13-15), Leah Rabideau (Women 13-15) and Brice Simeon (12 & under).
SPORT (3 laps) David Draus (Monkey Wrench Cycles) edged out Lansen Morehouse (Revolution Cycling) by just two seconds to win the Sport Open event. Other top finishers included Larry Kintner (Sport 35+), Bill Mize (Sport 45+) and Tom Baumgarten (Sport Clydesdale). Laurel Ahlman took top honors in the Sport Women's race.
SINGLESPEED (3 laps) Former Lincoln resident, Dave Averill blazed the 3-lap Sport/Singlespeed contest in 1:06:20 with Troy Nelson (Cycling Club of Nebraska) 1:33 back. Matt Wills (Cycle Works/Moose's Tooth) finished third at 1:09:11.
EXPERT (5 laps) Stephen Jarrett (Cycling Club of Nebraska) continued to show impressive early season form with a solid victory at the Psycowpath MTB Series opener at Swanson Park in Bellevue saturday afternoon. Jarrett covered the 22.5 mile, 5-lap "Expert" event in 1:41:27. TREK rider, Jesse Reints fought his way from mid-pack to take second place, 2:02 back. Jarrett's Cycling Club of Nebraska teammate, Greg Shimonek rounded out the top three, 2:23 behind. Other top finishers included Cycle Works/Moose's Tooth rider, Paul Chapman (Expert 35+) with a winning time of 1:46:17 and Jennifer Tilley (Sunflower) covering the 4-lap Women's event in 1:42:12.
