Omaha, Nebr. - Two of Nebraska’s most popular races, the Dave Babcook Memorial Stage Race and the Papillion Twilight Criterium, have joined to create the Omaha Cycling Weekend. With a total prize list of more than $12,000, additional omnium payouts, a cycling tour to promote pancreatic cancer research, and children’s races and activities, there will be something for everyone.
It all begins at 9 a.m. on July 12 with the Mount Michael Time Trial. The 9-mile loop starts at Mount Michael Abbey, northwest of Elkhorn. On top of a total payout of $1,100, a special "Eddy Merckx" prize will be given to the fastest finisher on conventional equipment (no aero gear). A good showing in the time trial will be essential for anyone trying to score maximum omnium points.
Criterium racing kicks off Saturday afternoon at 2 in downtown Papillion. Expect a fun environment with lots of spectators, a bounce house for kids, and exciting racing until dusk. Racers will enjoy a $5,000 prize list and a Bontrager tire with every prime.
Whether you’re a spectator or a racer, warm up for Sunday’s race by entering the Babcook Family Research Fund Cycling Tour. This 31-mile ride will be led by Team Kaos members, feature full SAG support, and will have refreshments available at the turnaround point. All proceeds will be donated to the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center.
The Babcook Memorial Criterium begins at 9 a.m. on Sunday in downtown Omaha. Only a few blocks from the historic Old Market, Sunday’s course is sure to please. With a $5,000 prize list and a $750 omnium bonus on the line, some riders might be inclined to take chances in the corners. Thank goodness for free laps. Hang out in the shade at turn three to watch the fun.
