Nebraska's very own Aaron Pool (Johan Bruyneel Cycling Academy) of Omaha and Alex Boyd (Waste Management/Racelab) of Papillion are racing in the Tour of Pennsylvania this week. The $150,000 prize list for Tour of Pennsylvania makes it the world's richest race for elite international riders under 25. It is a six day stage race covering 420 miles across Pennsylvania.Twenty, six-man teams will participate including at least five international teams. This year's riders are from; USA, Argentina, Canada, Belguim, Australia, Ireland, Netherlands, and South Africa.
Tuesday was the start of the stage race with Stage 1 being a two part stage with a time trial and criterium. First was the time trial in Fairmont Park, Philadelphia. 102 riders finish the 2.18 mile (3.51km) time trial. Aaron came in 21st place with a time of 4:32.9, 14 seconds behind the winner and teammate Steven Van Vooren. Alex finished 26th with a time of 4:33.8 making him 15 seconds behind.
The second part of Stage 1, the criterium was also held in Fairmont Park that evening. The 20 lap criterium was 30 miles (50km) with 98 finishing. Alex finished 11th and Aaron came in 36th in a pack finish making no change in the General Classification from the time trial earlier.
Stage 2 - Wednesday's race is from Downingtown to Carlisle. This is right in the middle of Amish country where racers may find themselves riding along side the horse and buggies of Lancaster County. The 91 miles (146.5km) of rolling terrain will be the host of two intermediate sprints inEphrata (29 miles) and Hershey (57miles) with the KOM at the top of a 2.5 climb to Spring Hill (43.3 miles). Weather forecasts for the day look to be 85 and sunny with a west wind of 9 mph.
