State Champs Crowned At Ponca Print E-mail

65 racers came to sample what Ponca's Revenge had to dish out at the Nebraska State MTB Championship at Ponca State park on June 21st. Event #4 in the 2008 Psycowpath Series sponsered by the Nebraska Lottery, this tough course is a proper venue to sort out the best from the rest in the state.

Although temperatures made it into the 80's, the day was sunny but lacking the oppressive humidity experienced in 2007. Rain activity in the preceeding days made for a tacky track favored by racers on trails that had been groomed by several members of the SC Velo crew in the previous weeks. This is the 3rd year that SC Velo has hosted a race at this venue.

Iowa strongman Cam Kirkpatrick (Rasmussen Bike/Orbea), seemingly aging like a fine wine over the years, held off the power trio of Midwest Cycling Community racers Kent McNeil, Stephen Jarrett and Kevin Limpach by one minute to win the Expert Open race. Those three took the podium as the top Nebraska finishers.

Our own Cody McCullough showed that he can win on terra as well as tarmac by topping the Expert 35+ class ahead of Nebraskans Jesse Peterson (Monkeywrench), Greg Shimonek (MCC) and unattached rider Jeff Bergen in their title event.

Roxzanne Abbott of Omaha was an uncontested state champion in the Women's Expert race and SC Velo racer Mollie Mize won the Women's Sport Open uncontested as well.

Paul Webb (MCC), Paul Eichler (The Bike Way) and Andrew Keffer (Velo Veloce) respectively topped the Nebraska podium in the Sport Men Open race also won outright by Webb.

In Sport Men 35+, Kory Hill (MCC) was first and state champ and SC Velo racer Ken Peterson, the victim of an unfortunate flat on the first lap, worked his way back to finish an impressive 2nd. Mark Butler (MCC) joined his teammate as 2nd Nebraskan and longtime roadie Craig Schmidt (Lincoln Industries/High Gear) was 3rd Cornhusker.

Double road winner at the Norfolk Cycling Classic, Mark Brackenbury (Team Kaos) made like the Energizer Bunny as he was the state champion and outright winner of the Sport 45+ oldster race over fellow Nebraskans Randall Crist (Velo Veloce) and Gary Nebeker (MCC) respectively.

Mark Savery (MCC), Joshua Beasley (Bike Masters) and Clarke Dolton (Tomac Bikes) were the best among the Single Speed hard men and also the top three Huskers.

Kent McNeill along with a few others have been busy the last month and a half. France last month and Leadville 100 this month. Kent was kind enough to regale us with his account of their adventures.

2008 E’tape Du Tour

This year was supposed to be easier. I suppose in terms of mileage and total elevation gain, it was. Our route from Pau over the Tourmalet and then to the top of Hautacam was 108 miles with 11,600 feet of climbing. The past couple of years our routes have been from 125-150 miles with 13,000 to 14,000 feet of climbing and we have ridden in extreme heat conditions. This swung us to the other end of the spectrum. Hypothermia!

"The Race Across The Sky" Leadville Trail 100

"Your from Nebraska?" the gal at medical check in asked. "Yes" Steve replied. "So you’re taking the high altitude medication Diamox then?" she asked. "No" Steve replied, having never heard of it. "Oh Boy!" she said with a tone of amazement and worry. "Good Luck!"
