The 8th annual Dakota 5-0 in Spearfish, SD was one for the record books. I was fortunate to be asked to join the MWCC and crew and roll in stylee up to the land of the buffalo. It was a blast to be amongst friends including Mod and Anne, Matt and Jill Tilingast, Eric Brunt (Monkey Wrench / Jimmy Johns) and Larry "Hot Pepper Harlan" Kintner. Keeping each other entertained was the key. We got so desperate at one time, Mod suggested we whip out our cell phones once we past the mountain time zone sign to see who's phone would turn first. For the record, Alltel is weak! After hitting Arby's at Al's Oasis we made a b-line for Spearfish. It was a gorgeous early evening when we arrived. Some of the War Axe crew were already there, holding a spot for us. We set up camp lickety split and got the fire going soon after. It was great to be able to get off the road and not have the anxiety of preparing for a race the next day. We still had all day Saturday to play and get ready. |

This year was supposed to be easier. I suppose in terms of mileage and total elevation gain, it was. Our route from Pau over the Tourmalet and then to the top of Hautacam was 108 miles with 11,600 feet of climbing. The past couple of years our routes have been from 125-150 miles with 13,000 to 14,000 feet of climbing and we have ridden in extreme heat conditions. This swung us to the other end of the spectrum. Hypothermia!

"Your from Nebraska?" the gal at medical check in asked. "Yes" Steve replied. "So you’re taking the high altitude medication Diamox then?" she asked. "No" Steve replied, having never heard of it. "Oh Boy!" she said with a tone of amazement and worry. "Good Luck!"

Omaha, NE - Interest for the Carmichael Training Systems Omaha Camp has been good, but not quite good enough to make the camp a sure thing, June 27 - 29. Four more people are needed to make this camp a reality.

Omaha, NE - If you ever wanted the same instruction that has driven riders like Lance Armstrong, Alison Dunlap and Roland Green to the top, you are in luck.
Nebraska Cycling Association board member and past CTS Training Camp participant, Nancy Stirek is coordinating with Carmichael Training Systems to bring this training opportunity to Omaha, June 27, 28 and 29. This three day camp is designed for riders of all abilities and levels of cycling.
"It’s a wonderful opportunity for us, but it takes everyone’s participation to bring this to fruition," says Stirek, who estimates 12-15 riders will need to sign-on for the camp to secure the date with Carmichael Training System.
The three days will cover a range of topics including climbing, cornering, descending, pacelines and nutrition. The camp will be led by an expreienced group of cyclists, including:
Justin Peschka 12-time Arizona State Champion, road cyclingJay Guyot
Multi-State Champion in Master’s Road, MTB, and Track events
Jason Tullous
Master’s 30-34 World MTB Champion
The camp, rides and instruction is interactive and fully-supported by the CTS Staff. Space is limited, so if you are interested, please contact Nancy Stirek before May 10 to reserve your spot and/or learn more about the camp, cost, etc.
