Kansas City, Kan. – From the podium to the announcing stand to the media and expo tents, Nebraskans played prominent roles at this weekend’s USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships.

Lincoln residents Sydney Brown and Troy Krause each finished second, with Brown winning the silver medal in Friday’s Masters 35-39 race while Krause was the runner-up in Thursday’s Men’s B 40-and-older race. Brown’s mother, Nancy Brown of Bennet, also finished second in the Masters Women 60+ age group race Friday.

In Sunday morning’s Single Speed race, Lincoln’s Tony Wilhelm finished fifth to become the fourth Nebraska rider to make the podium during the four-day event.

Seventeen racers from Nebraska were among the more than 2,000 athletes who competed on the 1.91-mile course at Wyandotte County Park near the Kansas City Speedway.

Four others from Nebraska also worked behind the scenes: John Lefler, Jr., president of the Nebraska Cycling Association and a Lincoln race promoter, was one of four race announcers. Omaha public relations specialist Sean Weide managed the pressroom, John Peterson of Nebraskacyclingnews.com assisted with media photography and recent University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduate Marlo Holt coordinated the Exposition tent.

The national championships are scheduled to return to Kansas City on Dec. 11-14, 2008.
