christian-finish.jpgLincoln Hometown boy Christian Davenport won Sunday¹s final stage of the Lincoln Plating Classic but Lafayette, Colo., native Kevin Nicol of the Tokyo Joe¹s Cycling Team held on for the overall victory.

Davenport, riding for race host Lincoln Plating-Lemond, broke from the United States Cycling Federation Pro I-II field with two laps remaining. His two-second victory in the 90-minute criterium moved him from fifth to fourth overall and made him the highest-placed Nebraska racer.

"I saw I had a pretty good gap and thought I'd go for it," Davenport said. "I thought the worse thing that could happen was to finish in the pack." Davenport's victory was so decisive he had time to zip up his jersey and pump his fists in the air, drawing a huge cheer from a contingent of Lincoln
Plating fans and employees who gathered for the race outside the Lincoln manufacturing plant's headquarters.

Nicol's winning margin was 36 seconds over GS Ciao¹s Andy Edwards. Jon Tarkington of the Vitamin Cottage Cycling team out of Boulder, Colo., was third, 1:02 behind Nicol.
