Colorado Springs, Colo. - USA Cycling announced today its first lot of nominations to the U.S. National Team for the 2008 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships in Treviso, Italy, Jan. 26-27.

Sixteen athletes were nominated to the squad in the elite women’s, U23 men’s and junior men’s categories based on their competitive performance over the course of the last year.

After capturing a silver medal at the 2007 world championships, Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Spike Shooter) received an automatic nomination and will lead the elite women’s squad. Compton is currently ranked second in the world behind Dutchwoman Daphny van den Brand and earlier this year captured the biggest win of her career with a victory at the third round of the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup in the Netherlands.

Kansas City, Kan. – From the podium to the announcing stand to the media and expo tents, Nebraskans played prominent roles at this weekend’s USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships.

Lincoln residents Sydney Brown and Troy Krause each finished second, with Brown winning the silver medal in Friday’s Masters 35-39 race while Krause was the runner-up in Thursday’s Men’s B 40-and-older race. Brown’s mother, Nancy Brown of Bennet, also finished second in the Masters Women 60+ age group race Friday.

In Sunday morning’s Single Speed race, Lincoln’s Tony Wilhelm finished fifth to become the fourth Nebraska rider to make the podium during the four-day event.

Seventeen racers from Nebraska were among the more than 2,000 athletes who competed on the 1.91-mile course at Wyandotte County Park near the Kansas City Speedway.

Four others from Nebraska also worked behind the scenes: John Lefler, Jr., president of the Nebraska Cycling Association and a Lincoln race promoter, was one of four race announcers. Omaha public relations specialist Sean Weide managed the pressroom, John Peterson of Nebraskacyclingnews.com assisted with media photography and recent University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduate Marlo Holt coordinated the Exposition tent.

The national championships are scheduled to return to Kansas City on Dec. 11-14, 2008.

Seven National Champions Crowned On Final Day of USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships

07_kccx_logoKansas City, Kan. - Tim Johnson will be the first to admit his performance was hardly flawless Sunday.

But the Cannondale-Leer-CyclocrossWorld.com rider rode fast - and skillfully - enough to emerge from a muddy, ice and snow-coated course at Kansas City's Wyandotte County Course as the national champion.

It was the second national title for the Middleton, Mass., resident. His first came in 2000 - when the national championships were last in Kansas City.

"If you could stay upright and not get into trouble, that was considered flawless, even though your speed was up and down," Johnson said.

Jonathan Page (Sunweb-Pro Job), who has spent the entire cyclocross season racing in Europe, finished second. Todd Wells (GT Bicycles), the 2005 national champion, was third.

Selander Outkicks Driscoll for U23 Title, Crash Halts McCormack's Chances

07_kccx_logoKansas City, Kan. - Race-goers to the USA Cycling National Cyclocross Championships finally got a chance to pull on the extreme weather gear that had been languishing at the bottom of their luggage. It was cold and snowy from the ground up and frozen and unpredictable on the surface.

Following each start, eager, sadistic fans flocked to the course's pressure points to wait for the inevitable bobbles, spills and crashes, and Saturday's races did not disappoint.

Psycowpath Date Swap!

08-psyc-logoIt has recently come to our attention that the traditional race course loop at L&C encroaches on private property in some places.  The race course is being rerouted but will need a few more months for completion of a fun and challenging race loop.  In September, riders can expect the classic L&C terrain, including miles of familiar trail as well as some freshly laid tracks that will offer a new spin on a classic venue.  The Kanesville Krusher Lewis & Clark XC, now on September 27, will serve as the 2008 Nebraska Lottery Psycowpath Series Final.
