Four Individual Champions Honored as Downhill Concludes Competition

Angel Fire, N.M. (October 22, 2006)-Fort Lewis College completed its sweep of all four Division I men's events at the 2006 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships as Chris Heath won Sunday's downhill competition to secure the overall Division I title for Fort Lewis College - its third championship in the last four years.  Fort Lewis College earned a total of 698 points to edge defending champion University of Colorado by 25 points. After the men's squad won the short track and 4-cross events Friday and the cross country race Saturday, Heath clocked a winning time of 5 minutes, 8.06 seconds as the fastest man down the mountain to earn an individual downhill title and solidify an overall win for Fort Lewis.  And because a school's overall point tally included both men's and women's events, a third-place effort from Sarah Elworthy in the Division I women's downhill race also factored heavily into Fort Lewis' overall win.

Kent McNeill along with a few others have been busy the last month and a half. France last month and Leadville 100 this month. Kent was kind enough to regale us with his account of their adventures.

2008 E’tape Du Tour

This year was supposed to be easier. I suppose in terms of mileage and total elevation gain, it was. Our route from Pau over the Tourmalet and then to the top of Hautacam was 108 miles with 11,600 feet of climbing. The past couple of years our routes have been from 125-150 miles with 13,000 to 14,000 feet of climbing and we have ridden in extreme heat conditions. This swung us to the other end of the spectrum. Hypothermia!

"Your from Nebraska?" the gal at medical check in asked. "Yes" Steve replied. "So you’re taking the high altitude medication Diamox then?" she asked. "No" Steve replied, having never heard of it. "Oh Boy!" she said with a tone of amazement and worry. "Good Luck!"
