Bend, Ore. - Chris Spence's Masters 35+ victory at the Bend Memorial Clinic Cascade Cycling Classic will go into the Team Kaos annals as a textbook example of teamwork. "I couldn't have done it without Marco (Vasquez) and Mark (Brackenbury)," Spence said after accepting the final yellow jersey of race leader Sunday. "Those guys did a fantastic job."
Vasquez and Brackenbury's hard work to keep Spence in the yellow jersey was never more evident than in Friday night's downtown criterium. Lap after lap, the pair chased down attack after attack for nearly the entire 45-minute race.
"I felt pressure for sure," Spence said. "In the crit, the guy in second place at the time (Michael Larsen of Bend Bike 'N Sport) was definitely looking to split it up and possibly get gap."
But with Vasquez and Brackenbury again patrolling the front of the peloton Saturday, Spence put more time into Larsen with a second-place finish in the 85-mile Pacific Power-Cascade Lakes Road Race. Stage winner Christopher Phipps (ZTeam), who soloed in for the win, now loomed as Spence's biggest challenger, 1:28 behind.
Spence said that made Sunday's 63-mile Deschutes Brewery-Awbrey Butte Circuit Race the toughest of the three-day, four-stage race.

Courtesy Photo Louisville, KY - Fred Galata of Omaha Velo Club had an exceptionally successful week at the National Senior Olympic Games in Louisville, Kentucky, last week, winning all four cycling events in the 55-59 age group. Fred's versatility was evident in his two road wins, the first coming from a solo attack off from a pack of 6 riders, which broke off from the 60 member peloton in the 40k circuit race, for a 35 second win. He then won by half a wheel-length in an uphill field sprint in the shorter second circuit race.
Fred's time in the 5k time trial was a new Senior games record. He narrowly avoided a mishap, saying that, "I ended up taking the turn-around a little too hot. My tubulars started to slide out from under me, and when compensating to stay upright my left foot popped out of my pedal. I lost valuable time and momentum., but finished with a 7:11 and a 26.5 MPH average. I was surprised to find out that I had won, and by just 2 seconds over 2nd.
"I came away from the Games with an appreciation for good health. Afterall, the older riders wouldn't be there without it. Everyone was serious about competing, but at the same time you would have a laugh with them after each event. Camaraderie at its finest."

The 2007 Bicycle, Blues and Bike Race is set and the final race flyer is complete. And wil be held July 7th and 8th.
http://northiowaspin.blogspot.com/
We have several highlights for this years race and we are hoping for a great turnout from from racers in Iowa and Minnesota!
New for this year:
+ 2,900 in cash payouts with 8 paid categories. One of the best paying road races in the Midwest!
+ Pro 1.2.3 = $1,400: Pro.1.2 will be racing for $800 paying 8 deep and Cat 3's will be racing for $600 paying 7 deep.
+ Closed Road Finish: We have approval from the county to have a closed road for the finish line and extra caution will be taken to ensure no vehicles enter the course. Only the final 1/2 mile will be closed and this will be well marked.
+ Improved Finish Line: Being a point to point road race many racers will not have had an opportunity to scout the finish line. This year the finish line will be well marked and racers will be able to see the finish from a distance.
+ No Waiting for Awards: Awards this year will take place near the finish line 30 minutes after results are posted (we hope and will do our best).
+ Parking at Finish: We will have more parking available at the State Park and limited parking at the Clear Lake Water Works parking lot, but please carpool as space is still limited.
+ Refreshments and food will be available at the finish for the racers.
+++ Have we mentioned the HED. JET Wheel Set give away for one lucky racer who pre-registers? See race flyer for details
