Photo John Peterson Omaha, Neb. - Duane Dickey (Mercy-Specialized) of Cokato, Minn., lapped the field in Sunday’s criterium in downtown Omaha to win the Pro I-II division at the seventh annual Dave Babcook Memorial Cycling Weekend.
Dickey also won Saturday’s morning’s 72-mile road race, which opened the two-day, three-stage United States Cycling Federation-sanctioned event. His strongest challenge came from Omahan Chris Spence (Team Kaos), who won the nine-mile time trial Saturday afternoon.
In the final standings, Spence finished one minute and 48 seconds behind Dickey and one second ahead of third-place finisher Jarred Berger (Team Einstein’s) of Fort Collins, Colo. Spence and Berger were teammates last year on the Omaha-based Nebraska Medical Center/Team Kaos squad.
Nebraska riders won eight of 13 categories: Omahans Jackie Weires (Women IV), Morgan Chaffin (Women I-II-III) and Fred Galata (Open Masters 55-and-over), Daniel Schuldt of Doniphan (Cat. V), John Vondracek (Open Masters 45-and-over) and Justin Maresh (Cateogry IV) of Lincoln, Jerry Arnold of Valentine (Masters 45-and-over) and Richard Hake of Madison (Masters 55-and-over).
More than 130 competitors from nine states enjoyed a lavish spread of food during Saturday night's appreciation dinner at the Upstream Brewery. Sunday dawned with cloudy skies and rain showers, but the precipitation moved out of the area before the first race and competitors enjoyed dry pavement on the half-mile course.
One of the most exciting races of the day came in the Cat. IV men’s division where road race winner Daniel Everhart (SKC Racing) of Kansas City, Kan., tried to overcome his 12th place performance in the time trial that knocked him down to 12th overall, 1:31 behind first-day GC leader Justin Maresh (Team Kaos) of Lincoln.
With the help of one of his SKC Racing teammates, Everhart broke away from the field early on and eventually soloed around the course to lap the field and gain back one minute and 10 seconds. Needing even more time, Everhart went after the 15-second bonus that would be awarded to the criterium winner. The 19-year-old burst through to win the field sprint and vaulted himself from 12th to second place overall in the final standings.

III division where Michael Bantle (Hoigaard’s/CLR/LHB) of Eden Prairie, Minn., grabbed a five-second time bonus with third place in the 60-minute criterium to jump ahead of Matt Pavlovich (Team Kaos) of Omaha for second place overall, just four seconds behind overall Cat. III winner Scott Fairbairn (All9Yards.com Cycling Team) of Bondurant, Iowa. Fairbairn had won Saturday morning’s 65-mile road race by 65 seconds and picked up the 15-second bonus that goes along with it. But his 15th place finish in the time trial lost him 1:13 of that lead.
